International Grads and Nova Scotia: A New Route for Immigration

Posted by Fabiola Arevalo - Bellissimo Law Group PC

In an interesting piece seen on CBC News, international students who graduate from a Canadian university will be given the chance to begin the immigration process in Nova Scotia, so long as they have a job offer from an employer within the province. Known as the Nova Scotia Nominee Program, this change in the policy allows well-educated people to gain stable employment, while also pursuing their permanent residency. The Nova Scotia Office of Immigration has the power to nominate candidates, though the final decision ultimately lies with Citizenship and Immigration Canada. Despite this, it’s a win-win situation for both sides; students can apply for Canadian citizenship, while Nova Scotia benefits from this boost in population and economic activity, and also creating incentive for students to attend universities in NS.
