Economic/Federal Programs

A permanent resident is a person who has been granted permanent resident status by immigrating to Canada, however, is not a Canadian citizen. Permanent residents are citizens of other countries.

As a permanent resident, you and your dependants can enjoy many of the benefits a Canadian citizen does. You have the right to:

  • receive most social benefits, including health care coverage.
  • live, work or study anywhere in Canada.
  • apply for Canadian citizenship.
  • protection under Canadian law and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

In addition, you must pay taxes, and respect all Canadian laws at the federal, provincial and municipal levels.  Permanent residency is an exciting prospect but there are many factors to consider before beginning the process.

There are several different ways to apply for permanent residence and the first thing you must decide is which program is the best fit for you.
