2015 Immigration Plan
Every year the Government of Canada sets the total number of permanent residents that they expect to admit to Canada under economic, family and humanitarian categories.
According to Citizenship and Immigration Canada (“CIC”), the 2015 plan features the highest planned level of admissions in recent Canadian history. CIC is planning to welcome between 260,000 and 285,000 new permanent residents in 2015, an increase of approximately 19,000 planned admissions over the 2014 year.
The 2015 strategy for admissions is detailed below:
- Economic 64.9% (181,300)
- Family 24.4% (68,000)
- Humanitarian 10.7% (29,800)
The obvious focus this year is on Economic immigration which is in line with the government’s long-term plan for economic growth in Canada. It also coincides with CIC’s launch and focus on the new Express Entry system for processing economic class permanent residence applications. The government’s hope is to attract the best skilled immigrants to Canada.
Secondary on their agenda is reuniting immediate family members. CIC’s planned admissions under the Family Class will be separated as follows:
- Up to 48,000 spaces for sponsored spouses, partners and children.
- Up to 20,000 spaces for Parents and Grandparents will be available.
