2017 Immigration Plan

Posted by Legal Team - Bellissimo Law Group PC

Every year the Government of Canada sets the total number of permanent residents that they expect to admit to Canada under economic, family and humanitarian categories.  Although a “substantial” increase in immigration numbers was promised, the 2017 plan features the same total levels as the 2016 year of 300,000.

IRCC announced today that it plans to welcome anywhere from 280,000 to 320,000 new permanent residents (targeting 300,000) in 2017, up slightly from last year’s targets of 280,000 to 305,000.

The 2017 target for admissions in each category are summarized below:

  • Economic Category 57.5% (172,500)
  • Family 28% (84,000)
  • Refugee and protected persons 13.3% (40,000)
  • Humanitarian 1.2% (3,500)

The highest percentage again this year is allocated to Economic immigration, this year’s economic immigrant targets have been increased by an overall 7.41% from 2016 levels. The Economic immigration category includes, the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program, Canadian Experience Class and Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program. Family immigration has also increased by almost 4% and, interesting, the refugee and protection persons’ levels have decreased by 10.71%.

A detailed list of specific numbers for all immigration categories for the 2017 year can be found here.
