Once again, Canada has been recognized as one of the safest countries in the world! Protecting our communities from the threat of danger and terrorism has always been our Government’s top priority and we feel proud to live in country that ranks high when it comes to peace and safety. According to the 2017 Global Peace Index (GPI), Canada takes the 8th spot out of 163 countries.

Each country was evaluated and ranked based on various factors: Homicide rates, death from internal conflicts, violent crimes, impact of terrorism among others. This is the second year in a row that Canada has ranked number eight. And what is it exactly that puts us at the top of the list? Canada scored the best when it came to factors related to internal conflict, such as intensity and deaths resulting. Violent crimes and political instability were two other areas that we did particularly well in.

Both the U.K. and the U.S. are behind on the peace-level scale. The U.K. only ranks at 41 while the U.S. has dropped 11 spots to number 114. Among the most dangerous countries in the world are Afghanistan, Iraq and South Sudan with Syria ranking as the most dangerous for a fifth consecutive year.
