Canada plans to attract foreign students
Changes have been made to work permits making certain international students qualified for open work permits. Foreign students who graduate from specific, accredited programs at qualified and certified post-secondary instruction can effectively obtain an open work permit under the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program.
This is the first time students may obtain work permit upon graduation without any restrictions on the type of employment or requirements for a job offer. The period for the work permit has also been extended to three years as opposed to the previous one or two years limited validation.
The government of Canada is making an effort to interest foreign students to stay in Canada, integrating the students who have studied in Canada to work in Canada. It hopes to benefit both employers and graduates alike as the program will help foreign students acquire important work experience while responding to the need of this country.
“Open and longer work permits provide international students with more opportunities for Canadian work experience and skills development. This will, in turn, help make Canada a destination of choice, and help us keep international students already studying in Canada.” said Minister of Citizenship and Immigration.
