Citizenship Backlog in P.E.I.
According to Citizenship and Immigration Canada, about 100 people in P.E.I were unable to vote in Monday’s federal election due to delays in acquiring citizenship.
155 extra government workers were hired to clear up the backlog at the application processing centre in Sydney, N.S seven months ago but delays have not changed. The average wait has grown to about 19 months since 2009 due to new rules regarding eligibility.
CIC stated that at least 70 of those individuals who were unable to vote will be sworn in during the next ceremony in three weeks.
