Controversial Muslim Cleric Wishes to Return

Said Jaziri, a controversial Muslim cleric who led the Montreal protests against the cartoon drawings of Muhammed now wishes to return to Canada after being deported to Tunisia three years ago. According to Canadian authorities, Jaziri was deported because he presented false information to get into Canada in 1997, and lied about having a criminal record in France where he had served jail time. He opposed his deportation on the basis that he feared torture by the government upon his return but it is unclear what his treatment was like while he was there.

Jaziri was captured trying to sneak into the United States from Mexico in the trunk of a car. He is currently being held in a California detention centre. He apologized to Quebecers in a recent interview with La Presse and promises to preach a more moderate form of Islam if he is allowed to return.
