Immigration officer too tough on war resister from the U.S.
The Federal Court of Appeal recently ruled that the immigration officer considering U.S. war resister Jeremy Hinzman’s application for permanent residence failed to take into consideration all of the applicable factors in the case, most notably, Hinzman’s moral and religious anti-war beliefs.
Hinzman was the first U.S. Iraq war resister to seek refuge in Canada. His case will be sent back for re-determination to see if he is able to stay in Canada on humanitarian and compassionate grounds.
