New Legislation on Prevention of Human Smuggling.

On October 21, 2010 the Harper Government introduced the Preventing Human Smugglers from Abusing Canada’s Immigration System Act.

This legislation will make it easier for law enforcement agents to both prosecute human smugglers and impose mandatory sentences on those convicted of human smuggling, thereby ensuring the safety and security of the Canadian population.  The Act also introduces numerous deterrence measures that apply specifically to individuals using human smugglers to come to Canada.

In addition to this new legislation, Prime Minister Stephen Harper will be appointing Mr. Ward P.D. Elcock as Special Advisor on Human Smuggling and Illegal Migration.  The Special Advisor will be responsible for promoting Canada’s relationship with governments in source and transit countries, partner states and in regional and/or international discussions focused on human smuggling.
