Ontario did not get a friendly welcome to spring this year that’s for sure. Fortunately, the weather is looking warmer in the next couple days which means more time for adventure and hiking is in store! Ontario has a total of 6 national parks and 72 provincial parks! There is almost too much land to discover so why not get started this spring? Ontario parks for the most part consist of a low mountain range, tons of lakes and long beaches.

Now for the list:

Pukaskwa National Park: Located on the shore of Lake Superior, in Northern Ontario, this park is usually overlooked by larger parks. The White River Suspension Bridge over Chigamiwinigum Falls is a highlight of the backcountry Coastal Hiking Trail.

Point Pelee National Park: This park is located on Lake Erie, which is the warmest of all the great lakes! You can walk along a 1 km floating boardwalk over water and marsh areas which are prime for spotting wildlife.

Quetico Provincial Park: For those looking to seek untouched nature, this is the park for you. Located in Northwestern Ontario, you can find plenty of wildlife and sometimes, the Northern Lights will make an appearance!

Killbear Provincial Park: Located on Lake Huron, in the Georgian Bay, this park has a ton of campgrounds, beach areas and hiking trails. Perfect for a weekend getaway.

Sandbanks Provincial Park: If you are looking for a beach, head to Sandbanks. This park is home to the world’s largest baymouth barrier sand dune formations and beaches! Head here for camping, beach relaxation and more.

Killarney Provincial Park: Located off the shore of Lake Huron, Killarney is filled with quartz crystal rocks, amazing hiking trails, private campsites and lots of fishing!

Lake Superior Provincial Park: A very long drive from Toronto, but totally worth it. Lake Superior Provincial Park is one of the largest provincial parks in Ontario, as it covers 1,550 square kilometres along the northeastern shores of Lake Superior, which is the largest great lake. It is known for its white sandy beaches, hiking trails and stunning views.

Hamilton, Ontario is home to over 100 waterfalls – all scattered across the city, with varying degrees of accessibility and is known as the waterfall capital of the world! City officials say it has the highest number of waterfalls of any urban area of its size. Some waterfalls are easily accessible from a platform, while others are an intermediate to expert hike away.

Although Hamilton has always been known as Canada’s “steel city” because of it’s home to a large manufacturing industry, natural attractions are becoming a destination for travellers.

The Hamilton waterfalls become extremely crowded during the summer months, therefore, try visiting in the spring, fall or even winter! In the winter, the falls are a winter wonderland, with many options to explore, but as soon as it warms up, the falls are surrounded by lush greenery.

When visiting the falls, it is important to respect the land and be aware of any uneven ground area which can cause injuries. The city itself has warned visitors to stay away from the area right beside the waterfalls, as they are typically near a very steep drop and the land can become unstable. It also advises that some areas are prone to flash flooding, while others have polluted water and aren’t suitable for swimming.

Spring is a season of renewal and most of all, a time when all things bloom. From fresh green leaves on a tree, to Magnolia buds and Cherry Blossoms, nature is putting on a show. This is especially true for our nation’s capital, where from May 12th to the 23rd, Canadians and visitors alike can celebrate the Tulip Festival.

The event will kick off in just two days’ time, with a musical fireworks show. This is just one of many fun activities to participate in, but let’s not forget the real centre of attention –the tulips that are ready to be admired throughout Ottawa!

The country’s tradition has been going on for decades, after Canada acted as a refuge for the Dutch Royal Family during WWII. As a thank you gift, the Queen sent thousands of tulip bulbs every year until the end of her reign in 1980. Despite this, the tradition continues and is a magnificent as well as colourful sight for all to see.
