Thanksgiving is more than just about food, family, and an extra day off. That’s right, it’s not only about indulging in that slice of pumpkin pie, the turkey and gravy, or hearing aunts and uncles tell their jokes. There’s actually a meaning and rich history behind it all.

Though not an official holiday in Canada until 1957, and on a different date than our neighbours to the South, Native Americans have been celebrating a form of Thanksgiving for centuries. During that time, the tradition was to give thanks for a bountiful harvest. With the arrival of Europeans to the continent, the practice continued and eventually became embedded in the culture of what is now called Canada. It became even more popular during the Civil War period as Americans fleeing the United States celebrated the holiday on a yearly basis.

Of course, how does one celebrate a bountiful harvest without food? Traditional Thanksgiving dinners include dishes and meals made with the season’s best fruit and vegetables.

Here is a list of flavourful (and filling) Thanksgiving foods:

Pumpkin pie
Turkey and gravy
Cranberry sauce
Mashed potatoes
Spiced apple cider
Roasted vegetables
Corn

So sit back, enjoy your day off, and have a family feast! The Bellissimo Law Group team wishes you a happy and safe Thanksgiving.
