Work Permits for Haitian Nationals

Effective immediately, Haitians in Canada can temporarily apply for work permits more easily. Citizenship and Immigration Canada has removed the requirement for a Labour Market Opinion (LMO) therefore making the process much easier.

Haitian nationals applying to extend their work permit as well as new applicants who are eligible will continue to receive coverage under the Interim Federal Health Program. Eligible applicants have until September 1, 2011 to apply.

These measures apply to all Haitian nationals who were in Canada prior to January 13, 2011 and are applying for a new or extension of a work permit. The LMO requirement will not be waived for those individuals who arrive in Canada after that date.
