Century-Old Discoveries

One hundred years ago, can you imagine what life was like back then? What did the city of Toronto look like a century ago? What was making headlines? Too bad a time capsule wasn’t created so that we could take a trip down memory lane…

Wait just a moment, there was!

On September 9th, 1915, a time capsule was buried at the former North Toronto Railway Station, which is now home to the Summerhill LCBO. On September 9th, 2015, hundreds gathered in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of this building and the time capsule was revealed.

Revealed from the time capsule were around 50 historical items including, but not limited to, blueprints, an old map of Toronto, six different newspapers from when the capsule was buried, Canadian coins, and the 1915 City of Toronto municipal handbook. One thing that was found to be surprising was that most of the items were in immaculate condition.

It is our turn to create a time capsule to be dug up one hundred years from now. You may be wondering what exactly was included in the new one. Well, placed inside are newspapers (including the Toronto Star, Globe and Mail, National Post, and a few others) from September 9th, 2015, an iPhone, a Blackberry, the September edition Toronto Life magazine, and a couple other momentous items.

All in all, September 9th, 2015 was an important day for Toronto, from digging up a piece of history to making history.
