Proposed Regulations on Conditional Permanent Residence

The Canadian government has imposed two new measures regarding spousal sponsorship in order to combat marriage fraud:

  • permanent residents must wait a period of five years after being granted PR status to sponsor a spouse, common-law or conjugal partner
  • applicants for sponsorship who have been together for less than two years, or do not have a child together, will be granted a conditional permanent residency for a period of two years, the condition being that the sponsor and the sponsored spouse must cohabitate in a conjugal relationship during the two year period after being granted PR status
