CIC Intends to Crack Down on “Birth Tourism”
Citizenship and Immigration Canada is committed to eliminating “passport babies” and “birth tourism”. These two phenomenons refer to people traveling to Canada to give birth in order for their child to obtain Canadian citizenship through automatic inheritance. Engaging in this practice is becoming very common in China where consultants are responsible for coaching pregnant women on what to do.
A Hong Kong newspaper, Apply Daily, which recently investigated this act, stated that pregnant Chinese women pay a fee to these consultants and are then instructed to wear black at the border, not pack any baby belongings, and to lay low until they go into labour.
The government intends to introduce changes to the citizenship laws in the next year in order to eliminate this practice.
