Update to the Study Permit Instructions

Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) has announced some updates related to the duration of study permits for prerequisite programs. Prior to 13 July 2016, students with conditional letters of acceptance from a designated learning institution (DLI) stating that the completion of a first prerequisite program (such as successful completion of an English as a second language (ESL) or French as a second language (FSL) program before starting another program of study) is a requirement to enrolling in a subsequent program, were issued study permits for the entire duration of both programs plus 90 days.

Effective 13 July 2016, officers will issue a study permit for the duration of the first program of study if the program is a prerequisite (ESL or FSL). In this scenario, after completion of prerequisite programs, students should make new study permit applications and demonstrate the successful completion of their first program of study.
